H. Cage is a work in progress that we presented for few hours in the Atrium of London College of Communication, as part of a project with Iris Garrelfs.
The space you are standing on is usually nothing but a mere crossroad, a tiny part of the path on someone’s daily routine. One of the conceptions of atrium belongs to the heart, the organ that sustains life. We intend to bring life to this otherwise underrated white plain chamber. A network of cages is laid on the walls, forming and intricate path for the hamsters to wander in. Furnished with running wheels, which trigger a captivating soundscape, the space has now grown into a pulsating organ, where the constant movement – both from people passing by and from the animal activity – forms a cycle of enrichment and metaphorical oxygenation of the visitor. This site-specific piece is inspired by work from other artists, such as Céleste Boursier-Mougenot and Quintetto by the Quiet ensemble collective. Both of these installations involve animals that, by different interactions generate or contribute to a controversial musical soundscape.

“NO HAMSTERS WERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS EXHIBIT. THE CAT GOT SICK AND SOMEBODY SHOT A DUCK BUT THAT’S ABOUT IT. “
